Make the Most of the Sunshine with a Healthier Picnic

With the British sun making a welcome appearance, it’s the perfect opportunity to head outdoors and enjoy a picnic.

Picnics needn’t be all about packets of crisps, pre-made pastries, and fizzy drinks. They can actually be a brilliant chance to enjoy a meal that’s both balanced and utterly delicious.

What should you pack?

Vibrant salads

Ditch the heavy pasta salads for colourful vegetable-based ones instead. A rainbow salad featuring peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, and a zesty vinaigrette is both refreshing and packed with nutrients, perfect for those warmer days.

Quality protein

Swap out processed meats for lean proteins such as grilled chicken, turkey, or tofu. These work brilliantly on their own, tossed through a salad, or tucked into a sandwich made with wholemeal bread.

Refreshing beverages

Rather than reaching for sugary soft drinks, why not prepare some infused water? Simply pop in your favourite fresh fruits or herbs like mint or basil for a drink that’s both refreshing and naturally flavourful.

Smarter snacking

Choose wholegrain crackers, a pot of hummus, and plenty of fresh, crunchy vegetables instead of a bag of crisps. This is also a fantastic way to reach your 5-a-day-goals too. You can get also use this as a chance to get your little ones to try new vegetables.

Fresh fruit kebabs

Create colourful fruit kebabs for pudding. The children will absolutely love them, and they’re a lovely light way to finish your outdoor feast. You can turn this into a game too. How many different coloured fruit and vegetables can you bring to your picnic? Bring on the rainbow!

Sensible portions

Pack individual portions to help keep things in check and make serving easier too.

Remember, it’s not about depriving yourself of foods, but rather finding that sweet spot where you can enjoy your favourite snacks whilst making more nutritious choices.
